SHOPPING SOLUTIONS
The evacuation, smoke control and structural fire engineering design of a shopping centre in Scotland are outlined by Michael Belsham and Nick Bernabé.
KINGSGATE SHOPPING Centre in Scotland has reopened recently following a £50m extension and refurbishment. Located in Dunfermline, Fife, some 14 miles north of Edinburgh, the existing shopping centre has now been extended to 34,374m2, providing 15,050m2 of new floor space. Some 27 new shops feature at the centre, and retail giant Debenhams has opened a 6,425m2 ‘anchor store’ within the two-level extension. There are also 711 new parking spaces over three parking levels, located above the central mall.
The fire engineered design for the project, undertaken by SAFE Consulting, included:
- Developing the design of smoke and heat exhaust ventilation systems (SHEVS)
- Providing the escape design, in order to fully utilise a combination of service corridors and escape stairs
